And just wait until you realise how many of those adults you trusted, told you how “mature” you were to make you feel “special” so THEY could say and do things things to you that were NOT in fact appropriate for THEIR age and developmental level 👀👀 #neurodivergent #queer #autism #mentalhealthmatters #psychology #adhd #autistic #anxiety #whosaidthat #depressionanxiety

Neurodivergent people often become masters of self-accommodation—building entire systems just to make daily life manageable. For me, that means carrying my home on my back—a backpack stocked with everything I might need. If I get a headache and don’t have my pills, I’d have to face an overstimulating pharmacy, which might drain all my energy and stop me from doing what I left the house to do in the first place. So I plan for every eventuality—sensory needs, executive function hurdles, energy crashes. It’s innovation born from necessity. #Neurodivergent #ExecutiveFunction #SensoryNeeds #disability #Neurodiversity #autism #autistic #psychology #adhd #audhd #mentalhealthmatters #MentalHealth

Autistic masking isn’t just social—it’s systemic. My PhD found that Autistic people often mask not just to “fit in,” but to avoid punishment, access education, or survive in workplaces that aren’t built for us. It’s emotionally exhausting, leads to burnout, and can make us feel disconnected from who we really are. I also found that masking is shaped by gender, race, class, and culture—what’s expected of us depends on how we’re perceived. Masking is not a personal failing. It’s a response to structural exclusion. Visit the link in my bio to sign up for an online class on masking later this week! Autistic sociologist Damian Milton (2012, 2018) introduced the double empathy problem—the idea that misunderstandings between Autistic and neurotypical people aren’t due to Autistic people “lacking empathy,” but to a mutual gap in understanding. The real issue? Neurotypical norms are dominant—so Autistic people are expected to adapt, mask, and empathize upwards just to survive. This isn’t a personal failure. It’s a social power imbalance. Milton’s work shows we don’t lack empathy—we’re just not always understood. 🧠 Want to learn more? Neurotypical traits are seen as the default, so when neurodivergent people communicate differently, we’re often seen as rude, unstable, or even dishonest. We say what we mean, and somehow that makes us less trustworthy? Meanwhile, neurotypical people are praised for diplomacy—even when it’s just polished dishonesty. We don’t get the benefit of the doubt. We’re questioned, second-guessed, excluded from decisions. Overlooked for leadership roles and promotions. It’s not that we’re not trustworthy—it’s that the system trusts masks more than honesty. Normalize different forms of truth. #Neurodivergent #Ableism #neurodiversity #psychology #autism #adhd #audhd #MentalHealth #mentalhealthmatters #autistic
For many neurodivergent people—especially those who are Autistic or ADHD—masking and camouflaging aren’t just social habits. They’re part of a nervous system survival response. When we sense danger or judgment, we might enter “fawn mode”—people-pleasing, over-apologising, or hiding our true selves to stay safe. Masking isn’t about wanting to fit in—it’s about trying to avoid harm. Over time, this can seriously impact our mental health, identity, and self-worth. Want to learn more?
